‘Let your light shine.’ Matthew 5:16

Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Willow Class

Welcome to Willow Class

We are a Year 1 and 2 class and The Treehouse is our home.

In our class, we aim to provide the opportunity for children to learn through engaging, creative and inspiring activities. Our reading area is like having a walk in the woods and is a place of calm and reflection for the children, as well as providing the opportunity for children to choose their own books and read for enjoyment.

Willow Class team of staff includes Mr Goldspink, Mrs Scott and Mr Morley who are committed to ensuring our room is an exciting, safe and secure location to learn and reflects a celebration of the children’s learning.

It’s not all about the classroom though! Willow Class has access to a superb outdoor play area and the children will often be outside learning through practical play-based activities to consolidate knowledge creation in the classroom. Every Wednesday, we visit our woodland area and will practise our number bonds in Maths, storytelling or look for seasonal changes and the first snowdrops appearing in Spring. We encourage all the children to engage and participate in our outdoor learning and view it as an essential part of our weekly timetable, whatever the weather.

Our day starts with phonics lessons; helping children secure those early reading skills that are vital to their wider learning journey. After break, we all have our snacks and enjoy listening to one of our favourite stories chosen by the children. We then get practical with our Maths before embracing Science, Geography, History, Music, French and IT lessons which often link to relevant topics in the afternoon.

All of our learning is underpinned by a commitment to the school’s values and our Religious Education and Collective Worship are cornerstones of our week.

We highly value our physical literacy and have weekly PE lessons that focus on core movement skills and start to introduce games such as dodgeball and basketball. The children always have a brilliant time in PE with smiles all round.

The main elements of our learning are linked to the 2014 National Curriculum but we also have our main topics for the year focussed around questions such as: Where do I live? Who is an explorer? Where is the Jungle? On the right is Mr Goldspink getting ready to explore the jungle!

We like to make our learning as cross curricular as possible making connections and exploring differences every step of the way.

As a team we also value the input and supportive relationships with children’s parents and if you ever need to talk to any member of the team, don’t hesitate to talk to us at the school gate or via Seesaw. We will always aim to get back to you as soon as possible and ensure you are assured your child is having a great learning experience in Willow Class.
