Welcome to Oak Class!

Oak Class

Welcome to the new school year here in Oak Class! It’s been great to welcome the new Year 3 group to the Oak Class team and that is exactly how we approach learning here in Oak Class… as a team. We work together every day to support one another, share ideas, and celebrate our successes. We encourage partner working and small group activities to teach the children all important teamwork and leadership skills. We help each other develop reading skills, practice spelling and learn our times tables. Everyone’s voice matters here so we focus on being kind, respectful, and encouraging to our classmates.

This year, get ready for some great experiments that will spark your curiosity and imagination! We’ll be exploring science through practical investigations and in-depth case studies. We will be learning about explosive volcanoes, life-giving plants, the fabulous food we eat and some of the wonderful living things that inhabit our Earth. We might even see some of these when we are out exploring the great outdoors during our Forest Schools sessions. In history, we will be looking back at the incredible lives of the Tudors, Egyptians and the Vikings. There might even be a period costume or two together with some awesome acting to bring those worlds to life!

We are passionate about reading in Oak Class and we will be diving into lots of wonderful books! Reading will take us on journeys to faraway lands, introduce us to fascinating characters, and help us learn new things every day. We’ll have quiet reading time, buddy reading, and chances to share our reading (and acting) skills with the class. Whatever your reading passion, there will be something for everyone. We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning and growing together!

Structure of the day

The day starts with a morning work session where we recap something that we have learned over recent weeks. This helps to embed that learning for future retrieval. This will also include a daily session of handwriting or spelling practice.

This is followed by our English lesson where we will focus on grammar, independent writing or reading comprehension.

After morning break, maths becomes our focus as we work through everything from addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, through to fractions and geometry.

After lunch, we turn to our foundation units of science, geography, history, ICT and RE.

We will end the day with a calming session reading our class novel.
