Enabling children to flourish and succeed

Willow Class

Willow Class

We are a Year 1 and 2 class and The Treehouse is our home.

In our class, we aim to provide the opportunity for children to learn through engaging, creative and inspiring activities. Reading is at the heart of what we do. From learning our phonics every day to our cosy reading nook for the children to relax and enjoy their favourite book.

In Willow Class, we get very excited about our learning whether that be counting to 100 or testing out our latest ideas in science experiments. We are all still very young in Willow Class throughout the day we have brain breaks to help us focus on our learning. It may be a dance to a Go Noodle – they are great fun – or we get the playdough out to help our fine motor skills or a spot of Dough Disco.

It’s not all about the classroom though! Willow Class has learning outside the classroom at its heart. We have access to a superb outdoor play area, and the children will often be outside learning through practical play-based activities to consolidate knowledge creation in the classroom. We also like to visit the woods whenever there is an excuse to do so and link to our learning and we have the wonderful Mrs Dawson who hosts engaging woodland activities for our class at least once a year.

We do like to be active in Willow Class, whether that through dancing, big moves, PE with Miss Griffin or a spot of yoga on a Monday.

Structure of the day.

Our day starts with phonics lessons; helping children secure those early reading skills that are vital to their wider learning journey. We follow that by keeping our literacy minds engaged with our English.  All our English lessons feature spelling, grammar and punctuation elements and are linked to class books to inspire the children and link back to our wider learning.

After break, we all have our snacks and enjoy listening to one of our favourite stories chosen by the children. We then get practical with our maths before embracing Science, Geography, History, RE, Music and IT lessons which often link to relevant topics in the afternoon.

All our learning is underpinned by a commitment to the school’s values, and our Religious Education and Collective Worship are cornerstones of our week.

Willow Class is more than just the children.

As a team we also value the input and supportive relationships with children’s parents and if you ever need to talk to any member of the team, don’t hesitate to talk to us at the school gate or via Class Dojo. We will always aim to get back to you as soon as possible and ensure you are assured your child is having a great learning experience in Willow Class.

You can also meet us on Reading Wednesday, where parents can join their child for their favourite story. It’s a very unique feature of Willow Class and we are proud of our prioritisation of the enjoyment of reading. We also have our class camel! Yes, you read correctly. Cairo is a huge fan of reading and loves to go home with the children each weekend to enjoy your child’s favourite book. The crazier the place you read with Cairo, the better!
